Jesus said: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." It starts with an order. "Love." That means obedience. This is difficult for us modern people. Because we're used to start with the question: "How do I feel about it, does it feel right?" We take ourselves as our own starting point. How often don't we hear: "Follow your heart"? Jesus has no truck with this. He says: "Follow Me." That is an order too. If you only follow your feeling, you do as you please. You become the centerpoint, while Love is not about you but about others.
How should you go about this? Should you hurt yourself, force yourself to do something that clashes with your feeling? Remember that thoughts always precede feelings. Your thoughts create your feelings, not the other way round. So you have to start thinking differently. Loving God can't just be done through the rose-coloured glasses of your religious or emotional feelings, because this feelings disappear after a while, they're not very consistent. It can only be done in the way Jesus has added: "with all your heart, soul and mind."
It begins with obedience, though. Jesus says: "If you obey Me, your love for Me shows. If you love Me, you will find that My father loves you too. I will love you and I will show you clearly who I am." And only then "experience" comes in: feeling. Your heart. And you see that you've received your love for God from God Himself.
At the same time this is about your soul and mind. Soul means life. If you experience the love of God your life wil change. You know why you exist: for God. And when it comes to the mind: you ask yourself who God is, you take an interest in God, you want to know everything about Him because you love Him. Then you will become intensely happy and delight with overwhelming joy. The Bible says: "You who have accepted Jesus Christ have received the right to become a child of God."
