The meaning of lifeWhat is life? What is the point in living? Why do I live? What's this life for? These questions always keep us wondering. We are provided with two answers.

One of these answers is that man is an accidental by-product of nature. He comes from nothing and is headed nowhere. He originates from atoms and passes away into atoms. 'Accidental', 'nothing', 'nowhere' and 'atoms' and many of these similar terms all come down to the same: 'desperation'.

If this answer is sufficient to you, you only live for the moment. In that case you'll judge all others by the standard of how they can be of use to you, or you to them, here and now. In that case we are all cogs in the endless machine of having, gathering, hearing and seeing. But this is all unspeakably tiring. No matter how much we've got; it will never be enough. No matter how much we'll hear or see, we'll never be satisfied.

But you'll have to go on, in spite of this forced, ongoing and never ending quest for satisfaction. You are after all just a cog in an endless machine. But what will you achieve with this plodding along? Generations come and generations go, but there is no real difference at all. Eventually it will lead you nowhere and it will all seem useless. The emptiness inside of you will never go away. Life will have no use when there is nothing but chasing dreams and never really finding something truly worth your while.

Perhaps you've told yourself: 'Come on! Take pleasure in this life and enjoy yourself as well as you can.' Perhaps you've noticed that this meant nothing. Because it is a foolish thing to continuously keep on laughing. Doesn't simply having fun lead to nothing? You could consider trying to find satisfaction in alcohol or (other) drugs. It may be possible to seek comfort in music, only to afterwards return to the reality of everyday life. Perhaps you'll live it up planning and achieving great things, produce fine art or you'll try being the best at what you do and perhaps even be an example to others in it. Maybe you deny yourself certain things and find meaning in being good to others. Maybe you'll satisfy yourself with working hard, or trying to be a good parent. Maybe you are a successful entrepreneur and make yourself lots of money. But is that it? Aren't you wondering what all of this is really worth? Can life find meaning in itself? Doesn't there have to be something else, something bigger than all of that?
